ABOUT Hair Removal

This article about hair removal has been prepared by the editors at Canadian Beauty Pal ™ to help men and women of all ages understand what hair removal is all about. While the topic of hair removal is of interest to men and women around the world, our emphasis here, is to provide helpful information for primarily for Canadian, American, and European visitors.

Introduction to Hair Removal

For centuries, men and women of all cultures and ages have practiced various forms of hair removal. Hair removal generally describes any method of removing hair from any part of the human body.

Human hair grows on all areas of the body except for the palms of the hands, the lips, certain areas of the private parts and the soles of the feet. Hair is most noticeable in most people in a just a small number of areas. These areas which are most commonly shaved, waxed, trimmed, or plucked include: the abdomen, armpits, back, chest, eyebrows, eyelashes, face, legs, head, and pubic hair.

Methods of Hair Removal

Depending on the area of the body involved, and whether a temporary or permanent removal of hair is desired, there are various methods available:

TEMPORARY HAIR REMOVAL: "Depilation", involves the removal of hair to the level of the skin, and usually lasts several hours to several days. Depilation can be achieved by shaving (most common form of hair removal) or trimming (manually with razor, scissors or with electric shavers). Depilatories (creams or "shaving powders" which chemically dissolve hair) can also be used for temporary hair removal, as can friction (with rough surfaces used to buff away hair). "Epilation", involves the removal of the entire hair from the root, and usually lasts several days to several weeks. Epilation can be achieved by plucking (hairs are plucked, or pulled out, with tweezers or with fingers). Another popular form of epilation involves waxing (a hot or cold layer of wax is applied and then removed with porous strips) and sugaring (similar to waxing, but with a, generally more organic, sticky paste). Threading (also known as fatlah or khite, in which a twisted thread catches hairs as it is rolled across the skin) is another form of epilation. Burning off hair with hot wax can damage the cells and prevent hair from ever growing in the unwanted spot again. Turmeric can also be used along with other ingredients like besan powder and milk. There are hair removal devices called epilators (mechanical devices that rapidly grasp hairs and pull them out). Even prescription oral medications are available for temporary hair removal. Enzymes (fx. the Epiladerm-Complex) that inhibit the development of new hair cells can be used as well.

PERMANENT HAIR REMOVAL: While many hair removal solutions are touted as permanent, this form of removing body hair is more difficult to achieve. Present day options involve chemicals, and/or varying energy types which are targeted at the areas that regulate hair growth. The goal is to permanently destroy these areas without harming the surrounding tissue. Electrolysis is one such method of permanent hair removal.
