Glossary of Beauty Terms & Expressions

- A -

Acne -- An inflammatory skin disease that effects the tiny pores thats cover the face, arms, back and chest as well as the oil glands attached to them.

Aloe Vera -- One of the most widely recognized skin care ingredients. It helps the skin replenish lost moisture and when applied to skin injuries, minor wounds, burns, rashes, or lesions. It works immediately and effectively to heal and soothe.

- B -

Botox -- Trade name for botulinum toxin. Used in tiny amounts, it can temporarily paralyze a muscle and reduce or eliminate wrinkles or frown lines without harm.

Bronzers -- A synthetic-tanning product used to make skin look darker. Available in powder or cream form and should not be confused with a self-tanner that is not water-soluble. Unlike self-tanners, which contain Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), bronzers can be instantly removed with soap and water.

- C -

Carnauba Wax -- Extracted from the leaves of the Brazilian wax palm tree. It is used for its emollient, moisturizing and skin protectant properties.

Collagen -- A natural substance within body tissues. It can be injected into the skin to plump up particular areas.

- D -

Dandruff -- A condition of shedding dead cells of the scalp. Usually caused by Seborrheic dermatitis (a common inflammatory condition that most often affects the scalp, eyebrows, eyelids, area between the eyebrows, the folds at the sides of the lower part of the nose, and the ears).

Depilation -- Depilation is a form of temporary hair removal, involving the removal of the hair to the level of the skin. This can be achieved by methods including shaving, trimming, and depilatory creams.

Dermabrasion -- A procedure in which the skin is sanded to improve its texture. Microdermabrasion uses a type of sand to abrade the skin, usually done by an esthetician or a cosmetic doctor. Cosmetic physicians can perform a deeper type of dermabrasion using small burrs or wires to remove the outer layers of the skin.

- E -

Eau de perfume -- Less concentrated than Parfum, but more concentrated than any other form of fragrance, with a stronger, longer-lasting scent. Because there are more perfume oils (more oil and less alcohol) in the formula, the cost to purchase Eau de Perfume is generally more expensive that other forms of fragrances.

Electrolysis -- Use of electricity to dissolve hair roots.

Epilation -- Epilation is a form of temporary hair removal, involving the removal of the entire hair from the root. This can be achieved by methods including plucking, waxing, threading, sugaring, and laser hair removal.

- F -

Finishing Spray -- A hairspray with medium hold used to maintain the hair’s shape and hold.

Follicle -- Part of the skin which the root of hair comes from.

- G -

G-String -- A panty or style of swimwear with a very thin (string like) band of fabric in the back.

Glycolic Peel -- Used to help peel or exfoliate the skin, making it appear more youthful.

- H -

Hair Removal -- Hair removal is the deliberate process of removing hair from any part of the human body. While esthetics are a common motivation, the reasons for removing body hair and the methods vary from culture to culture. MORE...

Hyperpigmentation -- Darkening of the skin, commonly produced by ultraviolet radiation, which provokes melanocytes in the skin.

Hypopigmentation -- Diminished pigmentation; the loss of melanin, often due to genetics, skin resurfacing techniques and aging.

- I -

Instant Conditioner -- A conditioner with light to intense conditioning properties that restores a healthy look and protects against further damage.

Irritant -- A substance that consistently and predictably produces an adverse response (such as reddening, swelling, itching, burning, or blistering) in virtually all of the population. Irritants are not to be confused with allergens.

- J -

Jasmine Oil -- A warming and smoothing oil used to revitalize and stimulate the skin. It is an oil used in perfumes because of its pleasant aroma.

Jojoba -- A tonic, emollient and moisturizer. Treats dry skin, wrinkles and stretch marks.

- K -

Keloid -- A sharply elevated, irregularly shaped, progressively enlarging scar due to the formation of excessive amounts of collagen in the corium during connective tissue repair.

Keratin -- A surface protective agent with film-forming and moisturizing action.

- L -

Lanolin -- An emollient with moisturizing properties and an emulsifier with high water absorbing capabilities.

Laser Hair Removal -- Laser hair removal is a widely practiced form of epilation performed using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) epilators. The "laser" is used to cause localized damage to hair follicles without harming the surrounding skin tissue. Repeat sessions are required for this hair removal method and while there may be a long-term reduction in hair, this method is not permanent.

Lecithin -- A natural anti-oxidant and emollient mainly derived from common egg yolk or from naturally occurring phospholipids derived from soybeans. Lecithin helps protect the skin, soften the skin and replenish the acid mantle.

- M -

Malnutrition -- Refers to various nutritional disorders. May be due to a poor or improper diet.

Melanoma -- A type of skin cancer characterized by a black or dark brown pigmented tumor.

- N -

Naturopathy -- A type of therapy that depends on natural forces rather than surgery or medicine to treat disease.

Necrosis -- An area of dead tissue caused by the death of a group of cells as a result of injury.

- O -

Ointment -- Type of dermatological vehicle that has an oil base giving it lubricating properties. It is often used to treat dry skin.

- P -

Peppermint -- Emollient herb that is astringent, stimulating, cleansing, restorative and healing.

Psoriasis -- A chronic disease of the skin consisting of itchy, dry, red patches, usually affecting the scalp or arms and legs. It may be treated with OTC or prescription medications.

- Q -

Quince Seed -- A creamy, gummy plant-derived extract of the quince tree. Used in skin and hair care products as a treatment for dry, chapped hands or damaged hair.

- R -

Remedy -- Anything that cures or prevents disease.

Rosacea -- A skin condition characterized by inflammed, red, oily, acne-prone areas.

- S -

Safflower -- An unsaturated vegetable oil derived from safflower. It is used for its moisturizing and softening properties. The flowers are used in decoctions for skin eruptions, acne and skin blemishes.

Shaving -- Shaving is a common form of temporary hair removal, which involves using a razor, or other sharp bladed instrument, to slice the hair down to skin level.

Superoxide Dismutase -- A naturally occurring enzyme that can protect the skin from free radicals, which can cause skin damage.

- T -

Tea Tree Oil -- A natural preservative with antiseptic and germicidal properties used in soaps, shampoos, and skin-care products.

Toluene -- Common solvent that is sometimes used in nail polish.

- U -

UV -- Ultraviolet radiation. The invisible spectrum of solar radiation. It is divided into three regions with increasing danger to the skin; UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C.

UVA -- Ultraviolet light, type A. These are rays of light from the sun which are not visible but can cause damage to the skin.

UVB -- Ultraviolet light, type B. These are rays of light from the sun which are not visible but can cause damage to the skin.

- V -

Vaccine -- An immunization performed primarily by needle injection that creates antibodies to fight a particular virus.

Varicose Veins -- Swollen and dilated veins, usually visible on the legs.

- W -

Warm Colours -- Colours often associated with fire and sun, which suggest warmth. These are colours that contain red and yellow and appear on one side of the colour wheel opposite the cool colours.

Wheat Germ Oil -- Promotes renewal of normal new skin cells. Used in cosmetics because of its large vitamin E content.

- X -

Xanthan Gum -- A highly molecular polysaccharide gum used as a thickener. A polysaccharide gum often used in foods as a thickener, it is synthesized (fermented) from glucose.

Xerosis -- Dry skin.

- Y -

Ylang-Ylang Oil -- Extracted from the flowers of the plant, the oil is used for its cleansing and refining properties. It also helps clear congestion and smoothes the skin.

- Z -

Zinc Oxide -- Used to protect, soothe and heal the skin. Also provides good sun protection.

Zirconium -- An ionic plant derived trace mineral.
